Lampshade

Lampshade

A lampshade consisting of four sides that form a square case. All the upper parts of the sides are carved, and in the centre of the pattern there is a stylised form of the character shou 壽, which means “long life”. Painted fabric is mounted in the frames on all four sides, depicting women and children, scenes from nature and living spaces. Chinese lamps or chandeliers have a long tradition in Chinese history. They were important elements in interior decoration and at the same time served to illuminate living quarters with a candle or oil. Even today, the custom of hanging lanterns during the Spring Lantern Festival (yuanxiao jie 元宵節), which marks the last day of the traditional Chinese New Year, is widespread. (TB and KKR)
