Oval fan uchiwa

Oval fan uchiwa

©

An oval fan (uchiwa 団扇) with a motif of flowers and birds (kachō-e 花鳥絵) printed on the obverse. The flower is red and yellow, and the leaves are green; it is a rhododendron, known as the flower of the heights or the queen of flowers, symbolising something majestic and hard to reach. The bird is a redstart, associated with the arrival of spring. The reverse of the fan is blank. It is a reusable fan, in that the image is printed on square paper, which was glued to the frame of the fan and then trimmed. If the wooden frame of the fan was not damaged, this could be done several times. The images used were reproductions of prints by famous painters such as Hiroshige. (NVG)
