A 1931 calendar, decorated with a padded textile figure depicting Zhongli Quan 鍾離權, one of the Daoist “eight immortals” (ba xian 八仙), legendary Daoist masters who are said to attain immortality by mastering various techniques. Zhongli Quan is associated with alchemy and is considered a protector from poverty and hunger. He is usually depicted bare-chested, sometimes also holding a magic fan or ruyi 如意 mushroom. (HM, PP)
