A figurine depicting Zhang Guolao 張果老, one of the Daoist “eight immortals” (ba xian 八仙), legendary Daoist masters who are said to attain immortality by mastering various techniques. Zhang Guolao is said to be a hermit and a master of magic. He travels on a mule, which he always puts in his pocket after the journey. He is depicted with an elongated drum made of bamboo, and with a fish skin, sometimes with a peach or with phoenix feathers. The figure is padded and glued to cardboard. (HM, PP)
