Postcard Ise Shrine 1
A black-and-white photograph with subsequent hand colouring showing the entrance to the inner shrine naigū 内宮 at Japan’s main Shinto shrine in Ise. The shrine is said to have existed since the time of Emperor Sujin 崇神天皇 in the 10th century. Today, this shrine covers an area of 5,450 hectares, with a range of buildings built from the best wood in Japan. During the Edo period, Ise was a popular pilgrimage destination for the common people.
