A silk cover adorned the Chuxiu Palace in the Forbidden City, where the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) lived. On the reverse is the inscription ‘Chuxiu Palace, second room east’, covered in ink. The obscured imperial provenance suggests that it was probably looted by the Boxers themselves during the Boxer Rebellion. The international allied forces did not hide their imperial origin, but were rather proud of  it.
