In Chinese culture, crickets, valued for their singing, are said to bring good luck and wealth. For this reason, they were kept in special cages since the Tang dynasty. The shape of the cage, in this case a gourd, determines the tone of the cricket’s song, while the thickness of the lid and the diameter of the holes in it also influence the sound.
