Payment receipt
A ¥20 payment receipt dated Aug. 3, 1922 (11th year of the Taishō period), issued by the Tōkyō Nichinichi Shinbun 東京日日新聞 (the present Mainichi Shinbun). The exact address of the newspaper house or its office in central Tokyo is printed on the certificate: 1-2, Yūrakuchō, Kōjimachi-ku, Tōkyō-shi 東京市麹町区有楽町一丁目二番地. This appears to record payment for an advertisement. The recipient of the certificate or the payer is Kuridžanosuki クリジャノスキー, possibly Križanoski or Križanosky. Alma Karlin might perhaps have advertised for a job or offered foreign language lessons. Perhaps Mr. or Mrs. Križanoski paid for this ad in her stead, and Karlinova reimbursed them, but kept the receipt. Another possibility is that Alma Karlin was interested in the format of such a document in Japanese and asked the payer to give it to her for inclusion in her collection of small objects. (CSB)
