Wooden box cover
A wooden board with an inscribed surface, part of a box or chest for storing important items such as a ceremonial silk kimono. One type of wood used is called kiri 桐 (paulownia tomentosa), which is especially prized in Japan because it is light and hard and protects the contents from moisture. It is often used to make chests, cabinets or musical instruments koto 琴. On this lid, the name of the object and the date are noted: hakama, Taishō 4/5(?) (= 1915/1916), November. Hakama 袴 are a type of trousers worn as part of traditional ceremonial dress. (CSB)
