Postcard Tsunami 1911 Torpedo Boat

©

A postcard with a snapshot of a natural disaster in Japan: the damage caused by the tsunami in the old part of Tokyo in July 1911. A torpedo boat was washed ashore. The postcard was sent to Alma Karlin by N.G., probably her Japanese student Mr. Nobuji from her time in London. The text of the correspondence is in English; the sender apologises for not replying for a long time to the letters and postcards she has sent him, “Dear Miss Karlin, I am very sorry to have kept you waiting for a reply to your most kind letter and the beautiful postcards, which I have had received long before, with best thanks but I beg you do not laugh at me. Yours very sincerely, N. G”. (CSB)
