Japanese woodblock print or Ukiyo-e Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō – Akasaka, A picture of women welcoming guests to the guest house
Akasaka 赤坂, the 37th print in the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi 東海道五十三次). It shows the view from the inner garden to the guest house. The view is partially obscured by the sago palm, which divides the print into two halves, left and right. On the right, three women prepare to join their guests. Around them are many richly decorated futons 布団 (a traditional Japanese bed that consists of a mattress and a quilt. Both parts are flexible enough to be stored in a closet during the day, so the room can serve as more than just a bedroom.) On the left, guests enjoy tobacco, drinks and company. A woman, probably the owner of the establishment, invites a third man, who has just come out of the bathroom, to join them. (KH, JR)
