A black-and-white photograph showing the German memorial at the International Cemetery in Beijing’s Legation Quarter (Dongjiaominxiang 東交民巷). The monument displays a quote from the Gospel of John (John 14:19): “ich lebe und ihr sollt auch leben [?] joh 14.19”. The English translation is “Because I live, you also shall live”.
The photograph is the 30th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Deutsches Monument am inter. Friedhöfe. (DZ)
