Photography Courtyard for Offerings and Floor Brick in the White Pagoda Temple
A black-and-white photograph showing the inner sacrificial courtyard of the White Pagoda Temple (Baitasi 白塔寺) in Beijing. The inner courtyard is bordered by a floor wall with a staircase and temples. On it stands a freestanding three-legged metal incense burner. The Buddhist temple is now called Miaoying Temple (Miaoyingsi 妙應寺). The stupa surrounding the temple, which is not visible in this photo, was built in the Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368).
The photograph is the 218th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Opferhof und Sockel der “Weissen Pagode” (Pai-Ta-Sze). (DZ, MV)
