Folding fan brisé
A folding fan brisé (Jap. sensu 扇子) made of Japanese cypress wood (hinoki ヒノキ). This wood is particularly suitable for making fans, being pale in colour and usually free from gnarls. The individual wooden slats are joined on one side with a silk ribbon and at the handle with a metal pin. This way of making Japanese folding fans is the oldest and dates back to the 9th century. It was very popular in the courts of the Heian period (794–1185). Usually the wood is not painted, as here, or it is painted only in light shades. Such unpainted fans were also used in Shinto ceremonies. (NVG)
