The third picture from an album of Chinese paintings of the everyday lives of court ladies, showing two ladies playing a board game. The painting offers a glimpse of the interior of the buildings, which cleverly blend with the exterior gardens, with interesting transitions of different shapes – a crescent moon, a circle or a vase – from one room to another. The vase-shaped door, as seen on the left side of the painting, represented peace, as in Chinese, “vase” (ping 瓶) is a homonym of “peace” (ping 平). (NVS)
