Postcard Japanese Dancers
A postcard belonging to the extremely popular genre of postcards depicting scenes from traditional Japanese life, which were printed en masse at the time of Alma Karlin’s visit as a result of technological advances in Japan, mainly as souvenirs for foreign visitors. The dancers in the photo are dressed in colourful spring kimonos and wear Japanese cherry blossoms in their hair. On the back of the postcard, Karlin wrote, “Kirschblütentanz, Kyoto (Cherry blossom dance, Kyoto)”. Perhaps she saw a similar dance performance on her visit. (CSB, MV)
