Oval fan uchiwa
An oval fan featuring a Japanese maple motif. On the obverse, Japanese maple branches are painted on a light blue background. The top branch has pink leaves and represents autumn, while the bottom branch has blue-green leaves with pink V-shaped winged seeds from the summer season. In the upper right-hand part of the fan, between the branches, are the signature Sei’u 晴宇 (date unknown) with a seal, the censor’s seal kiwame 極め with the year 1860, and the seal of the publisher Ise Sōemon 伊勢屋惣右衛門. The reverse of the fan depicts a samurai covering his face and a courtesan, and a signature sai 斎 (flower) with the same publisher’s seal as on the obverse. The collection includes two identical fans (K72 and K78). (NVG)
