Photography Eyelet of the Bell at Dazhong Temple
A black-and-white photograph showing the ringing of a bell at the Dazhong Buddhist Temple (Dazhongsi 大鐘寺) or “Great Bell Temple” in Beijing. The temple was built in 1733, while the bell inside is more than 300 years older. It was cast by the Yongle Emperor (reigned 1402–1424). On the ring is carved a text in Sanskrit.
The photograph is the 248th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Tschung-Tse: (Tempel d. Grossen Glocke ) Oese der Glocke. (DZ, MV)
