A black-and-white photograph showing a three-part marble memorial arch (pailou 牌樓) at the Biyun Temple (Biyunsi 碧雲寺), or “Temple of Azure Clouds”. The temple was built in the 14th century, during the Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368). Today, it stands about 20 kilometres northwest of the centre of Beijing.
The photograph is the 405th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Pi-Yün-Tse: Marmour-Pailou. (DZ, MV)
