Calendar for year 1923
A wall calendar with tear-off sheets for each month, probably used by Karlin during her stay in Japan, with only the sheet for January torn off. On a solid paper base in a round shape are four tabs in which a postcard-sized ukiyo-e reproduction is inserted. This can be changed at will. The ukiyo-e reproduction here shows Suhara Station, from the series of 69 stations of the Kiso route (Kiso kaidō rokujūkyū-tsugi 木曽街道六十九次), which was created in the period from 1835 to 1842. The first author was Keisai Eisen (1791–1848), who depicted 24 stations, and the rest were depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige, who is also known as the author of the 53 stations of the Tōkaidō route (Tōkaidō gojūsan-tsugi 東海道五十三次). The Suhara Station motif is part of the Jōshōji Temple 定勝寺 grounds in the afternoon rain shower. Travelling monks can be seen in the hut waiting to continue their journey. (CSB)
