A black-and-white photograph showing the 58-metre-high pagoda of the Tianning Temple (Tianningsi 天寧寺), which can be seen on the right. The Buddhist temple complex is now part of the Xicheng district (Xichengqu 西城區) in Beijing. The octagonal pagoda was built in the 12th century. Another pagoda stands on the left. In front of it we can also see two stelae on the back of the mythological turtle Bixi 贔 屃.

The photograph is the 241st of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Tien-Ming-Tse: (Pagode des himmlischen Friedens). (DZ, MV)
