A Japanese fan in maiōgi 舞扇 style, painted on both sides with floral and branch motifs. Such fans are used in the performing arts such as kabuki 歌舞伎, 能 and dance nihon buyō 日本舞踊. It is made of strong paper sheets glued to sticks on both sides of the bamboo. There are small lead weights on the base of the handle to make the fan easier to handle during performances. The paper is painted with a motif of branches with cherry blossoms; the background is gold on one side and silver on the other. The motif of cherry blossoms (sakura 桜) has a complex meaning in Japanese painting. Cherries bloom only for a short time and are therefore a metaphor for short-lived life, but also for sacrifice, friendship and alliance. The fan is in good condition. (NVG)
