The screen depicts motifs from the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, based on printed books from the Ming dynasty. It is made using the kesi (緙絲) (‘cut silk’) technique, a special technique for weaving silk tapestries in which only short weft threads are visible in the finished product. The carved frame on the central panels shows scholars and officials and two lions playing with a hydrangea ball. By warding off bad things, they are said to bring good luck and a prosperous career.
