Photography Chinese Stores
A black-and-white photograph showing part of a street with shop fronts in Beijing. The rich façades are decorated with wooden doors and fences, and between them are poles with the names of the stores. The roofs of the façades are richly decorated with wooden joints or dowels. Rickshaw drivers and other passers-by gather in front of the stores.
Wooden elements such as doors, windows and fences are made in the usual lattice form. They served various purposes – from lighting and ventilation to decoration and division of space.
The photograph is the 115th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Chinesische Geschäftshäuser. (DZ, MV)
