Photography Musical Instruments in Front of the Dacheng Hall at the Temple of Confucius

A black-and-white photograph showing an arrangement of various musical instruments in front of the Dacheng Hall (Dachengdian 大成殿) or “Hall of Perfection” at Beijing Confucius Temple (Beijing Kongmiao 北京孔廟), just a stone’s throw from the Beijing Guozijian Imperial Academy 北京國子監. Among the musical instruments can be seen the bianzhong 编钟 bells arranged on a wooden rack. In front of them stand two large traditional Chinese stringed instruments guzheng 古箏, followed by four smaller ones.

The photograph is the 210th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Konfucius-Tempel: Musik-Instrumente. (DZ, MV)
