Karel Čepregi

  Legacies of mariners

Karel Čepregi (Beltinci 1907–Portorož 1989) was an engineer officer on ships of the merchant navy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia before and during World War II, and after World War II on ships of the merchant navy of socialist Yugoslavia. He compiled several photo albums as a memento of his life and travels across the oceans. In addition to scenes of sailors on ships and places he visited, one of the albums also contains photographs from the Second Sino-Japanese War in China (1937–1945), recording the attack on Shanghai, scenes from the battlefields, soldiers and locals. During this time, Karel Čepregi sailed in Allied convoys on the cargo ships Aleksandar I and Ivan Topić. At the beginning of World War II, he sailed between Africa, Australia, India and Great Britain, and later between Great Britain and the United States. How he obtained these albums is not yet known.
