Dušan Mayer
Legacies of mariners
Dušan Mayer (Šoštanj 1900–Slovenj Gradec 1971) sailed as a deck officer on long-distance merchant navy ships of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the 1920s and 1930s. Under the socialist regime in Yugoslavia, he was a commander on ships of the Slovenian shipping company Splošna plovba Piran. In memory of his travels in the 1930s, when he sailed on the cargo ships Avala and Nemanja of the Yugoslav Lloyd shipping company, he compiled an album of photographs and postcards of foreign places. The first part of the album contains photographs and postcards from Japan, followed by scenes from Western America and Durban. The ships of Yugoslav Lloyd sailed mostly to South America and Europe, and less frequently to East Asia. Between 1931 and 1936, when he was second deck officer on the ship Avala, Dušan visited Japan, where he bought postcards and photographs and a leather photo album. His sister Majka (Marija) Mayer donated this album to the Maritime Museum Piran in 1974.
