Photography Great Wall of China
A black-and-white photograph showing part of the Great Wall of China (Wanli Changcheng 萬里長城) with fortifications. The construction of more than 20,000 kilometres of walls and fortifications took place in different historical periods. The Great Wall served not only for defence, but also for customs clearance of trade goods that entered the Chinese Empire via the Silk Road. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
The photograph is the 360th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as die Grosse chin. Mauer. (DZ, MV)
