Insert page Botanical Motif
The ninth insert from the album The Decoration of the Palace Buildings in Beijing. It shows the motif of floral and plant patterns decorating the buildings of the Forbidden City (Gugong 故宫 or Zijincheng 紫禁城) in Beijing. We recognise the motif of the peony (mudan 牡丹), which represents spring in China. It also symbolises the wealth and honour associated with an official position or high social position.
