The fourth picture from an album of torture, court and execution scenes from the Qing Dynasty, showing three condemned men with iron chains and weights.

Various aspects of Chinese society that were unusual, exotic, and seductive appealed to Western visitors. In addition to illustrations of various forms of punishment and court proceedings, they could purchase photo albums depicting court life and the interiors of Chinese rooms and gardens where court ladies stayed. Motifs depicting tea or silk production, theatre and opera performances, and especially a variety of local landmarks, including ships in the harbours, were also popular. (NVS)
