A haidate 佩楯 thigh shield of finely woven brown canvas, hemmed with green and white painted leather. The canvas is reinforced with a sewn chain of wire rings to which are attached red lacquered spiky metal protective parts and various round heraldic symbols decorated with flowers. The haidate is tied around the waist with a cloth band and fastened to each thigh with a horn button. On the inside of the shield, the inscription Tanaka 田中 is written in Japanese characters on the leather label.
