Photography Flock of Sheep
A black-and-white photograph showing a flock of sheep outside Beijing. Historically, Chinese animal husbandry had developed from nomadic livestock farming to mixed farming and specialised breeding. Historically, sheep and goats were a common and important source of food and textile production. This was the case until the 18th century, when they lost their sacrificial function, which was taken over by pork.
The photograph is the 130th of 449 photographs of Beijing and its surroundings in the album of Ivan Skušek Jr., purchased during his stay in Beijing (1914–1920). In the handwritten inventory of the album, the photograph is referred to as Schafherde. (DZ, MV)
