Painting Boat ride
The sixth picture from an album of Chinese paintings of the everyday lives of court ladies, showing a Chinese garden with two ladies in a boat, watched by a third through a round window. Water and architectural structures are common elements in Chinese gardens, as are stones. In the foreground of the painting rises a large sinuous rock symbolising a mountain peak. These were revered as islands of the immortals in the East China Sea as early as the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220). (NVS)
